Military Families
Welcome, Military Families!
Dear Military-Connected Families,
Welcome to North Shore School District 112! We are honored to serve families connected to the military, including those living in Fort Sheridan, Highland Park and Highwood.
We understand that military-connected students may experience school transitions, family separation during deployments and other changes that can affect school life. District 112 is committed to helping students feel welcomed, supported and connected to their school community.
This page includes information about enrollment, student records, academic planning, special education services, the Interstate Compact and local resources for military families.
Please reach out at any point as your family transitions to District 112. We are glad to welcome you to our school community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Holly Colin

Registration Process Information
New families living in military housing at Fort Sheridan attend Wayne Thomas Elementary School and Northwood Middle School.
Families can begin the enrollment process using the District 112 registration page. During registration, families should provide proof of residency, health records and any available school records. Military-connected families may contact Dr. Holly Colin at hcolin@nssd112.org for help connecting with the appropriate school team.
Educational Records Transfer Information
Families are encouraged to provide any available school records during registration, including report cards, current schedules, assessment results, health records, IEPs, 504 plans, English learner or bilingual education records, and contact information for the previous school.
Unofficial records may help the school support initial placement while official records are being transferred. Families leaving District 112 can also find information about notifying the district when a student moves out of the district.
Academic Planning Resources
District 112 serves students in preschool through 8th grade. The district’s curriculum is guided by the Illinois Learning Standards, which establish expectations for each grade level.
When a military-connected student enrolls, school staff review available records and work with families to support appropriate placement.
Special Education Services Information
Families of students with IEPs, 504 plans or other learning needs are encouraged to share current records during registration so the school team can support the student’s transition.
District 112’s Student Services Department provides services for students who qualify for special education. Special education services are available in all District 112 schools.
Families may contact Dr. Holly Colin at hcolin@nssd112.org with questions about enrollment, records or connecting with the appropriate school team.
Interstate Compact For Military Children
The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children helps address school transition issues for eligible military-connected students. The compact includes provisions related to enrollment, placement, eligibility for activities and graduation requirements. Military OneSource notes that families may use unofficial records until official records arrive and that the compact includes protections for students receiving special education services.
Families with questions about how the compact may apply to their child should contact Dr. Holly Colin or the NAVSTA Great Lakes school liaison.
Local Military and Community Supports
NAVSTA Great Lakes and national military family organizations provide additional resources for school transitions, relocation, deployment support, special education referrals and family services.
